Beta Support for Safari (desktop & iOS)

Version 4.0 - released June 7th 2021 - includes Beta Support for Safari, both desktop and iOS mobile devices (iPad & iPhone)


Safari: supported versions

Safari is currently supported on a Beta basis (Desktop & iOS) from version 15.1, released on October 27th 2021

Supported browsers for iOS mobile devices:   Safari (v 15.1)

  • Chrome and Firefox are not supported on iOS


Safari: user experience 

The following chart displays mashme behaviour in Safari browser, depending on the device used (desktop or mobile):

General user experience

If the mashme tab is not active, Safari will pause the audio/video automatically.


If the mashme tab is not active for a long time, a reconnection will be triggered to recover the room connections.


This behaviour is an inbuilt resource saving feature within Safari and is not specific to mashme software.

The experience will depend on the hardware specifications and the available resources.

Screensharing


Partial support

Safari only allows you to share the entire screen (tab or application are not available).

Safari does not allow you to share with audio.


Not supported

(Same behaviour as in an Android mobile device)

Room content

To download resources from a room, it is mandatory to "allow pop-up windows"  and "downloads" in the browser navigation bar.
(Or click:   Safari > Preferences > Websites > Downloads/PopupWindows > "Allow" )


To download resources from a room, it is mandatory to disable the option “block emergent windows” in Safari application settings.

Videos playback


Session recordings playback (and any videos recorded with H264 codec)

Can be reproduced without audio


Youtube or video playback

Synchronized experience is not enabled
Initial State:
  • Youtube videos will start muted and paused. The user must click on the video to start the playback; the user can also unmute the audio by clicking on the audio button. 
  • Other videos will start muted. The user can unmute the audio by clicking on the audio button.
  • A notification will explain both specific behaviours.


Safari: known issues

There are some current limitations in the Beta Support, stated in the following list:

  • iPhone support
    • The user experience will be improved over time
  • Video and youtube playback
    • Small issues while playing videos
  • Screensharing with audio
    • Audio is not received in Safari
  • Test portal
    • Safari desktop will not display more than one device when available
  • Other small issues

These issues will be solved in forthcoming releases.
